Designing a home for a retired couple who have spent much of their life travelling around the country is a tough task as it demands a certain sense of freedom coupled with modernity and eclectic charm. The task becomes even trickier when one has to balance the idea of openness with a suburban setting where a busy street sits right next to the home.
It is a combination of wood and white that shapes much of the lower level of the house and the wood here is much more than an aesthetic addition. Wooden ceiling and other wall coverings inside the double height living area help reduce dispersion of noise even as the entire lower level with its own bedroom can act as an apartment on its own.
A series of wooden decks around the house add to its impressive appeal with large windows bringing in all the necessary warmth in this harsh environment. It is hard to imagine a home set in a more exotic and exquisite landscape than Casa LM!
But it is also the setting to some of the most beautiful panoramic scenery that one will ever come across and sits on a small chunk of this natural paradise. The mudroom and laundry area are rolled into one with two staircases and an artist’s studio elevating the ambiance to a whole new level. Everything here feels curated and classy with textured walls giving the home a more traditional timeless look
A series of skylights and clerestory windows fill this large area with plenty of light while the kitchen and dining area in gray provide visual contrast and anchor the space beautifully.
The by Ben Giles Architect accomplishes this with a design that is sensitive to the needs of an elderly couple even as the street noise outside is kept out using a façade that relies on smart acoustics and wooden surfaces.
The house itself is a combination of contemporary design and woodsy warmth with straight lines and crisp finishes accentuating modern flair. A central axis of bedrooms within the house makes up the private zone and easily holds the large family of 6 while the exterior spaces serves as living area dining room kitchen and other social zones.
